Of course a flag is merely a piece of cloth that in a very real sense is no different than ones underwear. It is an easy way for governments to muster patriotic feeling among a group of people who might not be all that inclined toward a deeper patriotic expression of understanding their laws and political structure. The constitution is undoubtedly and unequivocally the reality of a nation. It is the philosophic framework and the true essence of the country. It is the truely hallowed document and not a flag. It takes little effort to wave a flag and feel patriotic. It is the mark of a good compatriot to understand the ideas of a given nation where he happens to reside

allegiance: noun; devotion or loyalty to a person, group, or cause
The flag is a symbol, a reminder of our Constitution, government, society. The Constitution is our law. We are really pledging our allegiance to the constitution. That we will uphold our laws as citizens.

For Americans... they are both the same thing. Allegiance to the flag is allegiance to the country is allegiance to the constitution.

Neither. I have no respect for both. They are nothing except some arbitrary symbols, which represent something other than themselves.
