Don't buy the bull that you NEED meds.
They recently lowered the cholesterol rating standard that says you need their drugs with even less cholesterol. 260 is pretty high though.
I would first start with some natural alternatives including Hawthorn Berry capsules, polycosonol, nattokinase, red yeast rice, omega 3, 6, 9. Also get plenty of fiber. It doesn't have to be Oatmeal. Psyllium seed husk is good.
Recent research shows that cholesterol levels may not be a good indicator of cardiovascular health, a more accurate test is to look at homocysteine levels in the blood. This is a special test that you will need to request when they do a blood panel.
To fight high homocysteine you should take Folate (folic acid), Vit B-12, and Vit B-6. Choose a good company for your vitamins such as Thorne or Metagenics.

Try diet and exercise first because the medications for cholesterol related problems have SERIOUS side effects. Do some kind of aerobic type exercise (running, walking briskly, etc) for at least 1 hour 5 days a week. Your diet needs to be modified to include fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, olive oil and to exclude meat. Eat fish instead. keep the processed foods, fast foods, fried foods, to a minimum. The diet is very important but the exercise is too. Lastly, take 3000 mg of FLAX SEED OIL every day after a meal. Keep this up for about 4 months and get your lipid profile done again. You'll see results.

A couple of years ago, I had a similar experience. Age has a way of catching up with us. I never had to watch my diet and I ate everything. Reality check. I knew I wasn't disciplined enough to change my diet, I love junk food, so the doctor put me on meds (lipitor) it made me tired, but after 3 months I was not only able to get off of it, (I lowered my cholesterol) but I had taught myself to make better eating choices. I feel a lot better. I really push drinking more water

Take a teaspoonful of psyllium husks (Konsyl) with each meal. Eat a bowl of Oat Bran cereal each day. Stop eating white sugar and flour and foods that are made with them. Cut way back on or eliminate animal fat from your diet (fish is OK). With your doctor's OK try policosanol, flush-free niacin, guggulipid, lecithin (3-6 tbsn a day), and plant sterols. Eat your daily recommended 3 servings of fruits, 5 servings of vegetables, and switch to whole grains. Take a good antioxidant formula.

Soul Doctor knows his stuff. If you also want to attack this problem herbally, visit www.trinityschool.org to find a naturopath in your state. It's always best to address an imbalance from more than one angle.
