I just brought a video game for it and it keeps reading error, but the console can play the playstation 1 games. What does that mean?

it probably has a weak laser. Perhaps its time for your PS2 to retire. How old is it now? Maybe you should send it off to the manufacturers

there are many things that could be wrong with your PS2.
First of all, try using a laser lense cleaner. this will clean the lense that reads the discs.
Second, this one is one of the inside tricks no one knows about. Alot of PS2's are having a problem with a desensitized magnet. By simply opening the system and putting a strong magnet up to the magnet that spins the disc, it will remagnetize.

A third possible problem is laser voltage. I do not know alot about this one, but there are guides out there to changing them. I provided some helpful links at the bottom. Good luck!

You can find some guides here on DREs and causes, + preventing them.

go to playstation2.com tell them what is going on. they will help you, the same thing happened to my playstation, they also will give you a toll free number to call. but they never answer that number, its all automated and very hard to speak to someone. good luck, mine is still broke. Try vacuuming the inside of the console too, carefully.
