You probably have the monitor shutting off after a given period of time.
1. Go to start menu --> control panel --> power options
2. on the Power Schemes tab find the area that says "Turn off Monitor". You want to select something else.
It also could be your screen saver. So go into the display applet and find the Screen Saver tab. Choose 'none' as your default screen saver.

If it is doing it when the computer is setting unused for several minutes, it is the power option. Designed to save electricity.
You can reset it by going into the Control Panel and clicking on the Power Options icon. On the Power Scheme page you will see a place where you can turn off the monitor after so many minutes. Either increase that time, or tell it not to turn off.
