the empire was too huge and there were too many different peoples, different races and different believes in it. so many in fact that it couldn't be controlled anymore. and then off course the romans took on christianity after constantein's vision had helped him win a battle. most people wern't very happy with this and so all in all it became to much. plague also killled many soldiers, so that the emperor didn't have enough men to fight to keep the empire together. it wasn't one reason, it was all these reasons (and probably more) together. it all just became too much

Probably the main reason for the decline of the Roman Empire was the decline of infrastructure. The imperial capital kept pulling all of the competent local officials away from the provinces and leaving them with officials that didn't have the credentials for government on the local level. With that, roadways and aqueducts fell into ruin, so communication and basic sanitary services fell by the wayside.

This in of itself cause the Roman Empire (by that we mean the Western Empire) to fall, but it set up the Empire like a set of dominoes. With Germanic invasions, eventually the provinces felt as if they were no longer a part of the Empire, so even by the time the last emperor was deposed in 476 CE, the Empire had pretty much disintegrated already.

Hope that answers your question.

The Roman Empire declined and fell because of economic reasons, which then turned all of the other reasons the other answerers gave from crises into catastrophes. Without a sound economic basis and a universally accepted currency, the empire could not solve its problems and they began to cascade one upon the other.

The basic cornerstone of the economic plight was the idea that the Empire's rich people were too poor, and her poor people were too rich; add onto that the idea that this problem needed to be reversed radically and immediately. The artisan - middle class was replaced with slaves, the resulting increase in wealth was then used to purchase luxury items from India and China (silks, spices, exotic animals for the collisseum, etc). The army could not be paid, so no one would serve. Those that did had to spend all of their time being farmers instead of soldiers, so there was no longer any hope of conquests or even defensive capabilities. Existing infrastructure was made to continue being overworked rather than being replaiced. Local areas had to become basically self-reliant, public health declined, and then the Empire was hit by plague, German Barbarians and Persian armies.

Ouch!

They're really one and the same. The Roman empire was also just referred to as Rome. Plus, the city fell for the same reason the empire fell--they became overextended, and ignored the fact that the people they referred to as barbarians were actually getting more and more Romanized, and they wanted to be treated like Romans, not second-class citizens. By the time people from outlying areas began attacking the Roman government, there were more "barbarians" in the Roman army than Roman citizens, so they revolted and joined their own people to demand their rights. They weren't really out to destroy the empire, as much as they wanted a piece of the action.

Its all one and the same as the decline of Rome led to its steady fall. It didn't just disappear overnight it was a gradual process and is intertwined with the decline.

The main points for the decline and fallof thr Roman Empire were;

1. bad emperors
2. increasing civilization of the people of the empire (which means weaker soldiers)
3. Roman disunity, endless infighting
4. economic decline
5. plagues
6. mass migration
7. and the settlement of the Visigoths in Moesia
