he's an idiot, "no good albums in the last 20 years"? what? the last 20 years have probably been the best 20 years for music.

He has a point..

If you listen to a lot of music from different eras and compare it to the "squeaky clean" recordings of today, you'll hear the "static" quality Dylan was referring to.

If you listen to Dylan's music you'll realise that vocally he isn't perfect, and most of his records are composed of improvising musicians, so things aren't exactly tight. That adds a certain charm to the music. You could argue that that is characteristic of the "indie-folk" genre, and doesn't have a place in R n B/Hip Hop/ Pop of today.

Because the quality of sound and recording these days is SO perfect (emulating the perfect image advertised by most of these artists. You know, great skin, long legs, great boobs etc... ), it just sounds flat. There's no heart in it almost, and if there was any during the recording it has been edited out during production. It makes the music predictable and boring. Music is all about "free-form". The scratchiness of the sound quality and the imperfect vocal intonation makes it sound fun!!! The dodgy, messy weavings of each musician's personal interpretation of the song just makes a recording THAT much more interesting to listen to. That's the whole point of music (I think anyway...).

Obviously from my rant you can tell that I'm quite the musician so I'm just looking at things from that point of view, because I've been involved in recording and playing stuff. Hope I haven't bored you! ;-)

He's an old git who should go away.

All old people say that today's music is atrocious. I'll bet I'll be saying it when I'm as ancient as Bob. He grew up with an older generation of music. It changes so regularly that if you don't want to keep up, you'll be stuck in the past. Bob Dylan is stuck in the past. He likes his generation of music, that's fine. Personally, I can't stand his generation of music. I think that it is terrible, but that's just me. I love today's music, but ther'll be a point in the future where I will stop enjoying new music and I'll be stuck in the past.

Mind you, If he's referring to manufactured pop with bints and prats who can't sing without a computer enhancing it, and who don't write their own music, then I totally agree with him.

He was 'the man' in his day, and he's correct that some modern music is proper tripe. It's a bit of a generalisation though, there are some good artists coming out with good new music all the time.

On the whole though, I have to agree that most of the stuff you see on music channels or hear on the radio is sh!te.

BOB DYLAN IS A ******* LEGEND!!

"modern" music is atrocious.

But there is some incredible musicians out there, making awesome music that is ready to be noticed.

I think that Bob Dylan meant that all "mainsteam" modern music is atrocious.

I mean, the mainsteam stuff is ****, face it. But we need to move away from that, and see all the artists that are amazing and arent being noticed, move them into the mainsteam, and introduce mini-whores to MUSIC. Actual MUSSSIIICCCC.

No, I don't really agree... but I think he's just being obtuse, that's his style... I think what he said was pretty witty in a way- what was it- 'Record companies shouldn't worry about kids downloading the music for free, it ain't worth nothin'... I mean I think it's more cheeky than anything else...

Reminds me of the vinyl/CD argument though... I don't want to get into that, it will never be resolved...
