In this day of test, test, test, test, most students are only interested in short-term knowledge to pass a test. They are not interested in the material itself and a year after having done the test, they'd probably fail it if they didn't study again.
They are not actually learning what it appears they are learning, at least not if you take a higher definition of learning which is more than simply being able to regurgitate facts on an exam. The long-term learning is often very little because their whole focus is on the reward (marks) rather than understanding and truly appreciating the material.

You are totally missing the point, probably looking for an excuse not to learn and perhaps just plain lazy.
The idea of getting good results is that you show that you 'have the ability to learn'
With that ability you can then go on to learn the useful and practical things, those with a better ability to learn than others will in the end get the better and higher paid jobs.
I agree that it does not always work that way. I have met Graduates that are not able to think independantly, and I have met people who have worked their way up through hard work. In the end however, there are more graduates that take higher positions than hard workers. It's that ability to learn, the application of making yourself work in order to learn to do a job. It makes a difference.
Also I would hope that they are at least learning to write well. If thats the case they are already way ahead of you in the employment stakes.

Well getting good marks (As and Bs in school) has to come first for me. I want to know things, but I also realize that college will be looking at my transcript first and foremost. So I wouldn't dare to take a class I really wanted to take if I thought there was a possibility that I might get a C.
But getting good marks and wanting to learn can go hand-in-hand. It usually does for me, except for when I hate a class (like English). Then I'll just try to achieve the mark.

It's for getting good marks in exams, 'cos that's the aim now. get marks, get admission for higher studies or get good jobs. Knowledge requirement comes later, if at all! Even at that, skill comes first, and then knowledge! That's realism for you: things will change -- some hundreds of years from now!

Your element suits into my concern. consistent with danger this is because of the fact i care approximately passing and getting good marks than no count if i individually learnt each and all of the stuff needed in the examination. you have helped me apporach my tests in a sparkling way, thnx.

hi,in my opinion students study for getting good marks only. do u know y is this? this is bcoz of competion.unemployment bcoz they know only one thing that if they will get goood marks then they will prefer good jobs. for example-in delhi university this year cutt off list for bcom was 93% marks not 93%knowledge. if nyone have this much marks he/she can get admision either they have knowledge or not. so in it there is no fault of them bcoz soceity mein itna competion hai hai ki unpar pressure dala jyada hai good marks secure karne ka not for gaining good knowledge.
