I was wondering where I could find free high-resolution (recent) album art, but not for iTunes, because I don't have an iPod and don't use iTunes.

I find the best album art on the musical artist's websites. Google or Yahoo search their name. Usually you can find their official website and get art there.
I understand MySpace.com was orginiated by bands for band promotion, so you can check there too.

Go to Yahoo! home page enter your search criteria (name of album) and search under IMAGES (click on top of the search bar)
Same in Google - mostly the same results.
