Jeff Astle of West Bromwich Albion scored the only goal of the final as his team beat Everton after extra time.

Astle, who sadly passed away on 19 January 2002, is a member of a very small band of players who have scored in EVERY ROUND of the FA Cup in one season. Only twelve players have achieved this :

Archie Hunter (Aston Villa, 1887 (winners)), Sandy Brown (Tottenham, 1901 (winners)), Harry Hampton (Aston Villa, 1905 (winners)), Harold Blackmore (Bolton Wanderers, 1929 (winners)), Ellis Rimmer (Sheffield Wednesday, 1935 (winners)), Frank O'Donnell (Preston North End, 1937 (lost in final)), Stanley Mortensen (Blackpool, 1948 (lost in final), Jackie Milburn (Newcastel United 1951 (winners)), Nat Lofthouse (Bolton, 1953 (lost in final)), Charlie Wayman (Preston North End, 1954 (lost in final)), Jeff Astle, Peter Osgood (Chelsea, 1970 - although his goal in the final came in the replay).

Astle's achievements are commemorated at the 'Astle Gates' at The Hawthorns, home of West Bromwich Albion.
