I'm Welsh and do not wish to be part of the UK. I don't like the English but agree with the chap above that Americans are much worse.

I think you will find that when asked what nationality they are, a Welsh person will reply that they are 'Welsh', and a Scot will that they are 'Scottish'. Very rarely would you find either nationality say that they are 'British', except on the passport.

The English, on the other hand, are more inclined to say they are British.

Slightly off topic - Great Britain only encompasses England, Scotland, and Wales. It does not include Northern Ireland (a common misconception). The UK, however, does. The full name for the UK is 'The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland'.

No one else in Europe likes us (as is regularly proved at the Eurovision Song Contest). They only pretend to like us when they want something.

America and Japan are probably the biggest fans of the UK.

The Welsh and Scottish do sometime hold a degree of animosity towards the English, afterall, there is a lot of history there - quite a lot of it bad.

In Europe there are generally fairly mixed feelings towards us; especially in the more dominant countries within the UE. This is probably mutual.

Outside of Europe there are countries that genuinely think that England (And the English) are great. But again, there are those countries that think anything but.

If you ask somebody from Scotland where they are from, they will tend to say Scotland rather than the UK or Britain. It's the same for the Welsh (Though of course they would say Wales).

If you ask somebody from England where they are from - they would probably tend to say the UK or Britain.

I love England with a depth of feeling I find hard to put into words. I spent my last three years of High School there. I get back every chance I get.

I also spent three years in Scotland when I was younger and love Scotland with all my heart.

The Scottish and Welsh are Celts, which is very different temperament from the English. And in my most recent associations I would have to say that I think there is a feeling of separateness there. The Scottish and Welsh together talk "we, we", and of the English "they".

But me, I love you all with all my heart.

Hey Ho, Maggie!

I don't think we are all that fond of each other really, plenty of rivalries etc. Sorry I am English, so can't really answer your question, but though I would say this anyway:

It is like in the Olympics, When an Englishman wins a medal he is English. When a Scotsman wins a medal he is British. When an Englishman does badly, he is British and when a Scots man does badly, he is Scottish. Quite amusing I think, but Scottish people hate us for it!

chris d...how right you are. many scottish people have picked up on this.

Its this and other things like it which cause many scots/welsh/irish to have a dislike for "the english" ( i will group you all together like the question has).
If asked if I am scottish or british, my 1st instinct is to say scottish. Not because I don't like the english or I want Scotland to be completely seperated from England, its simply this is where my patriosim lies.

Unfortunatly, questions like this tend to give people the opportunity to spout their hatred for other nationalities...

The English think they are a cut above everybody else - wrongly! The Scottish do not think of themselves as part of Great Britain but unfortunately, we are part of the UK. I don't know about the Welsh.

The Scots consider themselves to be Scottish, but enjoy the benefits that being part of the UK bring them. The same goes for the Welsh. I am all for these countries to break up the UK and become independent states. Then we English wouldn't have to subsidise them and could refocus our resources on improving the infrastructure and services in our country.
