How many planes disappeared without a trace during World War II?

I'm sure there were hundreds reported at the time, but as time goes on we have been finding them. There were the Navy squadron Flight 19 that left Florida and never returned. There was Glenn Miller's plane and Joe Kennedy Jr's as well (JKJ's was thought to have blown up). It would be difficult to put an exact number on it but with the shear numbers of planes that were produced during the period, I'd have to put the number at least at 500.
