For many reasons from Terrorism to entitlements budgets, we do not have open borders in this country.

Economic needs of immigrant workers aside, some firms have started responding to the situation by suing firms who hire illegals on federal racketeering and state unfair competition laws.

I believe this is the market attempting to self regulate and solve the problem without needing YET MORE LAWS enacted to deal specifically with this issue.

What do you think of this solution?

And please, I don't want this thread to be about the economic argument for/against immigration, please keep posts limited to the topic at hand- namely what you make of the phenomena of this self regualtion cropping up to compensate for lack of enforcement of immigration law?

Some firms. "Some" will hardly make a dent. Let's face it, if the government really wanted to stop illegal immigration, they would. They don't. Our economy is helped by illegal immigration and has been this way for years. The whole construction business is dependent on illegal workers. So are commercial landscaping companies and farms, and the list goes on. All you hear in the news is how the illegals are draining our economy. Trust me, if there were no jobs for illegals, they wouldn't come. Then those jobs would have to be worked by Americans who demand quite a bit more wage than the illegals got. Now businesses have to raise prices drastically. Not hard to figure the end of that.

The "market" is the problem. Employers want cheap labor so they can make money. Self-regulation in any field is largely a myth. Attorneys police attorneys through the ABA. A lot of good that does. Doctors police doctors through the AMA. Try to get rid of an incompetent doctor.
The main problem is the US Government. We already have laws on the books that are not enforced. Most people in the US are clamoring for border security, for our protection. The President and many in Congress pay only lip service to securing our borders.
If we had secure borders, we would have an illegal immigration problem limited to those who can sneak into the country with false credentials.
Hazelton, Pennsylvania has been in the news. Local government officials have been trying to crack down on illegal immigrants by various means. The ACLU is preparing a law suit. Way too many people have financial interests tied to illegal immigrants. Lawsuits of any kind benefit the attorneys on both sides, and little else.

I think the only answers that we can come up with are answers we don't want. The only to realistic options we have are open borders or some type of worker visa that does not tie into the minimum wage system.

As a country we are not ready to accept either one of these solutions, but they are the only ones viable. We cannot realistically build an effective physical barrier on our borders. Additionally the governments of other countries cannot enact exacting physical control on each of its citizens to keep them from crossing our border. In the case of Mexico their government is economically unable to provide a stable work economy.

To me the best option is worker visas since it addresses the issue of security and the issue of wages.

Illegal labor is Good Businesses. Businesses effectivly control the laws because they have the most money.

Nobody will ever enforce the immigration laws because it's bad for everyone. The only people who win by enforcing the laws are:

1. Those ignorant racists who want to see everyone but white people leaving the USA.
2. The socialists/commies who want to create a false issue and rile up the poor in support of their cause. Since they know they cannot get the government/businesses to screw themselves, a lawsuit is their only remedy to jumpstart "The Revolution".

Ok you say the market is attempting to self regulate, well for once it needs cheap labor or the products we would buy would be sky high, most americans wouldn't work for minimum wage. Second, even if illegals are here doing these jobs, companies could just outsource to another country to still keep paying cheap wages, but why is outsourcing not a crime?

1) Laws already exist but idiots do not enforce
2) The suits are to sabotage competition since most employers are greedy funkers who would stab someone in throat for a quarter
3) The fine for hiring illegal workers should be $250,000 per person..that would stem tide of hiring illegals at under minimum wage levels

I think it is a weak start to a huge problem. But it's a start.

Close the borders. Deport whenever possible. Quit making babies born here instant citizens.

Most of all-seal our borders.
