I had anorexia about 20 years ago. I think it's a matter of control. When your life is chaos, you can at least control your intake of food. I was really happy then. I partied every day and everyone admired my figure with clothes on. I looked like a model but underneath, I was like a skeleton. I wore a size one pants. I used to eat every Friday night and that was it for the week. Today I'm overweight and sometimes I wish I could have anorexia again, but I know it takes a lot from your health. You could die from heart failure, etc....)(

Anorexia is not just a need for control. I think that is a common misconception that a lot of people have and an easy explanation for why someone might be getting sick. That is one option, however, for me, it had a lot to do with body image and self-esteem. It wasn't a cry for attention. I didn't talk about it, I denied it until it was too obvious. It sounds ridiculous, but I didn't feel like a deserved nurishment. It wasn't even about weight until I was forced to gain weight back and then I couldn't bear to do that. It's a vicious cycle and I think that there are many things that contribute to it and the longer you are in the cycle the harder it is to escape.

I think it differs with every case. Some is out of depression, some attention-seeking and other has a problem, maybe all in the mind, there is lots of reasons why people get anorexia.

I definitely would say anorexia is about control. When everything in your life feels totally out of control food is the one thing that is easy to control. In my months of starving myself I never did it be thin or beautiful, to be like the models onthe front pages, but to obtain the attention of my parents and to show them how in control I really was. Since my healing process began I've since discovered that the cycle of anorexia can be repeated and this has been hard to accept because you know when things are bad that this could be a pattern you revert to. I've chosen to surround myself with people who remind me of my excellence each day.

Anorexia is a desperate cry for someone to complement or pay attention and to like/love the person as she is. She has gained weight, but we all do as we age. She needs to eat and keep the food in her system for health and happiness -- an adequate diet is what we need. Anorexia is a last desperate attempt to lost that weight that makes us feel inadequate, insecure, and anyone knows that in order to lose weight you have to eat. It takes food to burn the calories and fat. If food is not in our system, the body uses muscle tissue. Good luck, and try a sensible way (weight watchers) to lose weight.

for me its that nice feeling that there IS something I can do right. If I get a bad, grade in school, or know Ill never be in the the top of my choir, when I hate myself because theres nothing special about me and all I am is average. I think about what I ate that day... nothing :] I go workout, and extra hard, because I know THIS is something I can do. I can excersize, I can stay away from that disgusting food, and I can strip away all this awful fat. I CAN be skinny.

Anorexia can be caused by a range of different psychological and physical reasons, I think every case is different and there is no one answer that applies to all sufferers. HTH.

The relentless need to conform to the unobtainable airbrushed perfection forced upon us via media everyday from a young age, the need for control and a focus for depression would be my guess....
