Have you considered seeing a chiropractor?

Before you dismiss me entirely, let me explain chiropractic. Chiropractic is founded in the principle that our Central Nervous System (our brain, spinal cord, and nerves) controls EVERY bodily function. It is the master system of all our body systems, which is why damage to the spinal cord can cause paralysis and death.

When the spinal column (the bones around the spinal cord) is misaligned, the vertebrae can pinch the nerves that run out between them, causing pain, numbness/tingling, or any type of general malfunction in that nerve's corresponding body part. Chiropractic calls this nerve interference a subluxation.

Subluxations cause damage to the body because they interfere with the nerve impulses between the brain and body. Chiropractic uses adjustments to move the vertebrae back into their right position and remove the pressure on the nerves. I used to work in a chiropractic office and saw how it helped people with fibromyalgia as well as neck and back pain, asthma, allergies, chronic fatigue, chronice ear infections, the list goes on!

I'm not saying that this will be a definite cure for you, but if your other doctors have ruled out any other serious threat to your health, if they can't find the cause behind your pain and can only prescribe medication to mask the symptoms, then you might want to consider chiropractic. If you DO decide to see a chiropractor, first ask family and friends for recommendations. As with any profession, there are a lot of good DC's and bad DC's out there, so visit as many offices as you can and pick the chiropractor you are most comfortable with. No matter you decide to do, I hope that things improve for you. Good luck.

Chronic pain is a neurological illness, but the can pain manifest itself anywhere in the body. I've done some research on SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine) as a treatment for for fibromyalgia as well as chronic fatigue. SAMe contributes to the formation of key compounds in the brain, including the neurotransmitter dopamine and the mood-enhancer serotonin. Serotonin is a wonderful little chemical that increases the pain threshold (and relieves depression too).

However, if anyone decides to start a course of SAMe, they also must take a B-complex to prevent the build up of homocysteine in the blood <---very important! SAMe can't be taken with other anti-depressants, or by a person with bipolar disorder.

Magnesium is important for many pain problems, from muscle aches to sleep and mood disorders that accompany chronic discomfort. Magnesium helps relax spasms in muscles, and along with vitamin B6, is needed in the manufacture serotonin as well.

Essential fatty acids, such as gamma linolenic acid (GLA) and alpha linolenic acid (ALA), can keep inflammation and pain at bay and are important for long-term nervous system health. These "good fats" have been used to minimize (and prevent) neuropathic pain caused by diabetes and other conditions. They may also ease the aches of arthritis, and fight the discomfort of endometriosis.

GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is recommended by some sources to be taken in combination with DLPA. As a natural body tranquilizer, GABA suppresses stress-related nerve impulses that can aggravate pain.

Cayenne (capsaicin) cream contains the "hot" stuff from chili peppers. It suppresses pain by causing the depletion of a component in nerve cells called substance P, a chemical that transmits pain signals to the brain. While there is some initial minor irritation, applied over time as directed cayenne cream is very safe and can ease localized discomfort of arthritic joints, muscle pain such as fibromyalgia, and lingering nerve-related ills such as shingles.

Topical essential oils are often useful in treating arthritis pain and muscle aches; peppermint oil, wintergreen oil, eucalyptus oil, or rosemary oil appear to quiet stimulated nerve endings that are transmitting pain signals to the brain.

White willow bark has long recognized as a potent pain reliever; it is a "natural NSAID" and helps block natural pain-producing compounds called prostaglandins. It can ease many types of chronic pain, including neck and back discomfort, and also helps reduce inflammation and fever. This is the plant that aspirin is made from, but in it's natural form it won't harm your liver.

All of these products can be found at your local high-quality supplement store (never trust supplements made by Swiss, Jamieson, Quest, Equate, etc. if you want results). But please, make an appointment with a naturopathic doctor or qualified nutritionist so that you can come up with the right formula and avoid contraindications.

And remember, this illness is strongly linked to your stress and emotions. Try meditation, surround yourself with the colour purple, and implement stress management techniques daily. Use the essential oil of lavender often. You can take any medication or supplement you want, but if stress of any kind is still eating you, nothing will work.

Take care!

Tabitha.
