one of the copies of xp has to have a different copy of xp not the same one as the other computer cause it has somethng in the program that detects and will not work. to conect computer to computer only no Internet you need a cross over cat5 cable
and a network card in each computer
now if Internet with dialup then both would have to have a modem but only one computer could access the internet but you could pull file from the other computer or store files to the at computer and of course the network cards and the cat5 cross over cable
now the last one DSL 2 network cards 2 cat5 cables a 4 port 10/100 port network router/modem or just router then 1 more cat5 cable to hook to the DSL modem and then the phone cord ant electricity and yes both computers can be on line

A crossover cable's the cheapest way, if you have ethernet connections at both sides. Everything should be automated once you've plugged in, but if you need further help, there're a lot of guides out there on connecting two computers that way. Good luck.

Well, you could try superglue or a piece of wood and some nails but if you want to Network them, you can use a use a ethernet cable to connect the two and then run the "Network Wizard" to setup a new connection.

get a cross cable and connect them back to back
but if you want internet access you will have to buy a hub or switch and connect both the computers and the internet cable to three ports of the hub or switch
