petrol doesn't produce steam. It produces power through burning. And there is a guy who has made a vehicle that runs off of water. He's also made a torch. He is currently making a humvee for the military that runs on water as another test subject. He said that in a 100 mile round trip, he uses 4oz of water. He uses an electrolosis to produce HHO gas from the water and that's what burns creating the power. The 3rd source has a link to the actual Fox News story done on this guy.

Well, compare the results from lighting a few ounces of gasoline on fire to what happens when you try lighting a few ounces of water on fire. Water is already in its lowest energy state - you can't extract any energy from it except in a fusion reactor. One might as well propose to solve the problem of the lack of oil and global warming simultaniously by building a car fueled by atmospheric carbon dioxide.

Steam engines require an external source of heat. The larger steam engines are some of the most efficient engines out there, but trying to build a lightweight steam engine costs you a bit when it comes to efficiency.

Extracting energy from water requires heating it to make steam.

You must burn some kind of fuel to make the steam. Burning a fuel such as petrol to produce the energy directly, is much more efficient than burning wood, or some other fuel to make the steam.

Just go on and pour some fine bottled water into your gas tank. Car should run great. Don't use the stuff out of your tap, as it has too many impurities and will clog your valves.

If we had water powered vehicles, we'd have rain clouds following us around all day from the emissions.

This would not sit well with motorcyclists especially.
