The glass trip doesn't work because diamonds come in lots of grades from "synthetic" to flawless. A jeweller without morals will rub his hands when someone walks in asking for a 1 carat diamond he will have plenty of dud ones ready to palm off on the unsophisticated.
To answer your question very few jewellers in western countries would asa they would end up in jail quickly however it is very easy
to end up with one worth a lot less than you paid.

i'd believe DiamondDiana's fact that the inclusions can decrease the hardness scale from a 10 to a 9 even with the undeniable fact that, it might take a fairly huge inclusion to have a significant influence on the hardness scale. so as a standard rule i'd say NO, there is not a distinction. a sparkling procedure, I ignore the call of it, has been developed which makes a molecularly same man made diamond. they're as not ordinary as organic diamonds because on the atomic scale they're organic diamonds. even as the approach became unveiled it created really a situation for diamond professionals because they're unable to inform the distinction. The makers placed a mark on the diamonds purely so that they don't look to be incorrect for organic ones. fortunately they're very small and hence meant for use for business applications. So, utilising this NEW procedure.. the answer is not any, as in, there is not any distinction between guy-made (man made) and organic diamonds.

Currently, trained gemologists with appropriate equipment are able to distinguish natural diamonds from all synthetic and simulant diamonds, and identify all enhanced natural diamonds. The established natural diamond industry has a vested interest in maintaining the distinction between natural diamonds and other diamonds, and has made significant investments toward that end. However, as manufacturing technology improves, synthetic diamonds may become indistinguishable from natural diamonds, and new techniques for creating and treating simulants (such as coating them with a very thin diamond-like layer of carbon) are making it increasingly difficult to distinguish simulants from real diamonds.

Yeah, real diamonds can cut glass. That's the only way I can tell. Because Cubic Zirconias look just like the real thing now.
