Is it legal to WATCH taped TV shows ?

Like a CNN footage of the planes hitting the tower on 9/11 I got from the net, or a piece from a show, or a piece from an interiew. I see those on the internet hosted by big sites linking to youtube. Does that mean it's legal ? So to sum it all up, is it legal to watch a show, documentary, whatever, taped from TV without giving it away to anyone, just for yourself? What about the people who used footage from TV to make documentaries, did they contact the TV station to ask for aprooval ?

Thanks in advance.

It's called "time shifting".

Essentially, if you had the right to view the program in the first place, you have the same right to record the program and view it later. The court's reasoning was that all you are doing is shifting that right to view to a later time, not making additional copies for distribution.

But generally, the right is personal -- you can't make copies for someone else and give them away (or sell them).

Yes you can tape it for personal use only. You are NOT allowed to broadcast it for pay.
