If rent somewhere, generally how long does it take before I can move in? I'm planning that it will probably take 1-2 days, but if it takes longer, i'm in trouble. Most likely, this will be a condo or apartment.

depends on how fast your information is verified... The shortest it has taken me is 2 days but it can take up to a week

Generally, if you're renting an apartment, the manager will show you an empty apartment and indicate its' availability. If he doesn't have any vacancies, he probably won't even show you around.
Be sure and call ahead to any apartment complex before just showing up to rent. This time of year, apartments go fast.
Pack now, don't wait until your move-in date. Throw out the stuff you aren't using including old college books, those old calendars with the cute pictures; empty containers just "in case";

Most of the time the apartment is ready for a rentee to move in, unless it is a condo and the people currently residing there can't afford to move until they find a renter, then it could take longer.

When you talk to the landlord regarding the lease, ask when the place will be available for you to move in. Most leases run specific starts dates, usually the first of a month.
