what would that question be, and why?

I suppose my question would be ..is he lying?

Today's truth is tomorrow's lie (religion and science are the living examples). Every statement is bound to be kicked off its socket sooner or later. The only 2 statements that are valid at all times are:

1. Nothing stays the same
2. Love is eternal.

So you can state your questions, but truth cannot be absolute, since every person has a different perception of the truth (such as beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder). We live in the world of relativity, and so are our personal truths. It all depends how you look at it. Is turquois the most beautifull color? Yes, but you might disagree. So who's telling the truth?

The only person who will ever know whether you are speaking the truth or not, is yourself. Therefore, do not try to make someone else's truth yours (and make him accountable for what he has said), but follow your heart, for there is where your truth lies.

Just to keep your mind running, ponder on this one for a while:.

1. The ancient paradox of Epimenides from Crete: "All Cretes are liars." If Epimenides states that all Cretes are liars, then that statement includes himself as well. The validity of the statement undisputedly says that he has spoken the truth, which contradicts with the statement that all Cretes are liars, resulting in a paradox which cannot be solved.
Of course, this paradox can only be a paradox if the liar always lies, more concrete: every statement made by the liar must be false. And that is even for the world's greatest liar hard to keep up.

2. Eubulides of Milete used to say: "A person is saying that he lies."
Is what he says true or not true?

The question may be raised, "Since there are so many varieties of philosophers theorizing in different ways, which of them is correct?" The answer is that the Absolute Truth, Transcendence, is never subject to direct experience or mental speculation. The mental speculator may be called Dr. Frog. The story is that a frog in a three-foot well wanted to calculate the length and breadth of the Atlantic Ocean on the basis of his knowledge of his own well. But it was an impossible task for Dr. Frog. A person may be a great academician, scholar or professor, but he cannot speculate and expect to understand the Absolute Truth, for his senses are limited. The cause of all causes, the Absolute Truth, can be known from the Absolute Truth Himself, and not by our ascending process to reach Him.

The truth has no intrinsic value, as in order for you to have the absolute truth you have to believe in the person being questioned.

If you believe and trust (or know) the person being questioned, then the absolute truth is whatever they say. (be it a lie or not)

In response to your question, I would have no questions for someone I did not believe and trust. Knowing the truth to one question, would not solve the cause of the lack of belief.

Each person has a different viewpoint of the truth. Two people could give completely different answers to the same question, and both could be telling the truth.

What is my purpose in life?
That's because I've trained for three different careers and can't find anything I really like to do. (I like staying at home *smoking* and doing whatever - garden / diy / computer etc). I don't really think living off benefits is an option, but have never even heard of a career I would do for the fun of it.

I don't think any of us really wants to hear the real truth to the questions that are bothering us deep inside. Or maybe we want, but we're just not strong enough to handle it.
At least that's why I don't dare to ask.....
