The geographical center of the city is on the east side of Grand View Avenue between Alvarado and Twenty-third Streets.

If you are wanting a central hotel, then I would think the Union Square district would be best.

Have a good time.

I don't know where the exact geographical center is but if you want to be close to things to see and do I would suggest either Fisherman's Wharf or Union Square. North Beach is good too. But it really doesn't matter where you stay. The city covers a relatively small area and it's easy to get around and see it all. Take a tour when you first arrive. Greyline is a good choice. Don't listen to whatizname up there. It's a wonderful city. PIck up a book called Stairway Walks and explore on foot. You'll have wonderful time.

Union Square is central, definitely stay as close to there as possible. It's where all the nice hotels are, but there are some decent budget options within 5-10 minute walk.

Union Square could be considered a central area; its mostly shopping, restaurants and some condos.
Also close to public transit

It's all crap anyway !

So over rated...especially that Fisherman's Wharf/Pier whatever...very poor !

Once you've been to Alcatraz and been accross the bridge you might as well just go to L.A !
