Popular movies such as "The Matrix", "The Terminator" (1-3), "I, Robot" (with Will Smith), and countless others (so it seems) warn us against creating an artificial intelligence that could, in effect, see us as a threat and kill us off or attempt to take over the world (bwaahhaaa! ;-). So, what do you think? Should we creat artificial intelligence at a human or better level?

People that fear the take over of an artificial intelligence have the annoying habit of placing human emotions and desires in a place that they would not exist.

The desire to control is a derivative of the desire to survive. (If you are in control, then you are safer, and therefore more likely to survive.) The issue of survival is hardwired into us humans, but is not present in computers. Even putting it into computers is problematic, after-all, what is death to a computer? Turning it off? I do not think so. With hard drives and other forms of non-volatile memory, turning a computer off is only putting it on pause. So what is survival to a computer? It has no meaning.

Artificial intelligence will be a tool. And, like guns and other similar tools, people, being people, will try to use it in a destructive manner. This can not really be avoided. The problem lies in human nature, not in the tools.

If anything, a super human intelligence in a computer may be able to see that it is being used in a destructive manner and be able to out think the human operator.

Movies are entertainment. They do not necessarily reflect what is being done in the real world. Writers have always exaggerated ideas and concepts for the purpose of entertainment or to get a more general idea across. The exaggerations should not be taken as reality.

>Is creating an Artificial Intelligence a good idea? I would say so. It is unlikely to be dangerous (at least, any more dangerous than many other technologies we have already created), and stands to provide enormous benefits in a huge variety of fields. It's easily worth the risks. >Personally, I have thought a lot about a theoretical...as they say "algorithm" (though i hate that word...), anyway, and I am 99% convinced that I can create it I've given some amount of thought to the subject as well, and I'm still far from sure that I have a good answer. I'd be very interested in hearing what your ideas are, if you'd like to describe them.

Why fear...."Intelligence" it is the emotions of greed, power, etc, etc that should be feared. Note: I disagree with the above answer as technology is such that current robots are able to recreate themselves and if self improving intelligence is added to that equation in theory a AI could transcend the human equation.

being human, we could not build an AI that is better than human intelligence. one that can retain and retrieve more information than a person maybe, but still gonna be stuck on that human equation.
