No. It adds flavor to the games. Instead, the officiating should be improved on critical calls. Besides, do you know how hard it is to become a pro football player? Let them blow off some steam if they get a touchdown - its fun to watch.

I think the refs need to use their discretion when and when not to throw the yellow flag.

It was Mark Gastineau that started it all in the early 80s, hopping around like an ape, swinging his arms like mad when he sacked a QB. Was that showboating? Naaah, i dont think so, i think he was just happy that he did hos job well.

The "Lambeau Leap" after a TD by Green Bay receivers in the mid 90s. Was that showboating? Hmmm..... maybe a little, but it was harmless, and it really got the fans into the game.

Now, Joe Horn pulling out a cellphone after a TD?
T.O doing crunches or the Eagle wing flap in the endzone?
I think thats extreme, and more just rubbing it in the face of the other team.

Chad Johnson running to the sidelines and pretending to propose to a cheerleader? Thats just downright stupid and a waste of time.

Clearly, there are degrees to what is and is not showboating. Should the refs issue "more penalties" like you asked? It depends on the situation. Good question, though.

That's a very delicate issue to get into. How can you determine exactly what is showboating and what isn't? Celebration is part of the game, so how do you know what goes overboard? There is a line that needs to be drawn with the excessive crap like pulling out a sharpie and signing the ball, or pulling cell phone out of the goal post pad. The officials need to concentrate more on the calls they make now. The Superbowl last year was a perfect example of that. Their calls were so bad that Mike Holmgren didn't even get fined for his public comments about whether they were playing the Steelers or the officials in the Superbowl!

yes I do think they should issue more penalties for showboating and not just for scoring touchdowns, it seems no there is a reason to celebrate after almost every play. A guy gets a sack time to showboat, another gets a first down time to showboat, before you know it there will be a reason to showboat just for getting in the huddle. Plus our kids are looking up these guys on TV and you can see it out on the field when they start to showboat.

When you do something good at work, does your supervisor congratulate you on a job well done ??? I hope so.... And after you do something good and receive a congratulations doesn't it make you want to do something like smile, high five your co-workers or reward yourself....

An athletes job is no more different than a person who works in a office cubical from 9 to 5, and they like to have fun and play around on the job too... Why do people like you think they're showing off, when they're only having fun and trying to put on a good show for everybody. They make things entertaining for all us us because we take the time to tune in and watch and spend our hard earned money for tickets to come out and support them. At the end of the day, it's only a game. So lighten up will ya !!!

Besides even back in the 80's teams like the Bears and the Bengals would celebrate with end zone dances... The NFL is putting a black eye in the game trying to be so strict by calling penalties and fining everybody for every little thing... Their grown men for God's sake, just let them play and stop treating them like kids...

No, I think showboating puts more excitement into the sport. Sometimes I wish there was more of it.

well, it depends on what kind of showboating............i mean, things like what guys like chad johnson and steve smith do are nothing but entertaining, they're giving fans a show, which they pay to see.........but anything that consists of vulgarity or threats, that would be something that should be outlawed......other than that, i think showboating a little is fine

i don't think so... it keeps the rivalries alive between the teams. it seems that if your team is doing the showboating it's great. it's only the teams that get the show in their face that make a big deal about it.

Sounds great to me! They've taken the team spirit out of it and celebrate every little tackle or four yard run like they just won the Superbowl and are headed to Disneyland. These punks need a little humility.

you bet! Showboating is obnoxious and obscene. These guys who indulge are in need of real love and credit by the pound before, during and after the game. They are starved for attention, so they show boat. Ignorant asses.
