samples are the smaller ones / the new brands that aren't in the stores yet. retail are the normal ones in the store.

The only difference is the size. Samples are those small vials that lure you into buying those mega expensive but still relatively small retail versions. Samples are smaller. Retails are not as small...okay...larger.
