Couldn't we fix the social security "crisis" by implementing progressive taxation? Or taxing major corporations? Or even cutting a little military spending? The government could support the baby boomers through day cares, elementary schools, and high schools. In fact, there was a huge increase in funding for schools and other childrens' programs in the 60's. And we're actually richer now than we were then, can't we support them through retirement? Why attack social security?

SS is easily fixed by raising the caps.

for example there is cut off point at which people get taxed a certain amount.
for example say someone makes $800,000

they pay the same taxes someone who makes 1,000,000

so if we raise the caps then the problem is fixed.

The reason they want to eliminate SS
is for many reasons.

1) The president can borrow money from the fund, and not report it in the budget.
2) SS has been stigmaitized as welfare or a hand out which it is not.
3) The stock exchanges stand to gain tons and tons of money in commosions if it goes private.
4) The right wing wants to dismantle any or all New Deal victories.

Your right shouldn't the greatest nation look out for its people?

Social Security was created by President Franklin D Roosevelt (FDR), a democrat.

A lot of money was taken out of the Social Security fund by President Lyndon B Johnson, a democrat, to pay for his other government programs with the intent of replacing the money but never did.

President Bush tried to come up with ways to solve the problem of Social Security going bankrupt but the democrat lawmakers refused to cooperate. I heard on TV a democrat lawmaker say that they don't want to do anything about the problem while Bush is in office because social security was a democrat idea and they want a democrat president to fix the problem.

I think the idea of Social Security is a good one. We would have had enough money in the system if President Johnson had not taken out so much of it to pay for his other government programs. It is a shame that the democrats are playing politics with the future of Social Security.

Social Security is in a crisis and we have the democrats to blame for it.

No seriously all we have to do is do what it is suppose to do. Social Security is like a savings account. You put the funds in and they are suppose to stay there until you need them. What has happened for ... no clue how many years now... is that the social security fund has been counted against the deficit.

Do you remember Gore talking about the 'Lock Box' when he was running in 1999. That is what he was talking about. He kept saying we needed to put those funds in a 'Lock Box' and not touch them until we have replenished what we had borrowed from social security.

The misconception is that social security is in trouble because it does not work. It works fine. The problem is that it keeps getting robbed.

Yes we could but the strategy of the Republicans is to cut taxes for themselves while increasing governmental spending with 'no bid contracts' that pay off to the companies that are a part of their constituency....
