A man named Augusto Boal created a type of play called Theater of the Opressed in the 1960s. He started in Brazil, although he travelled all over South and Central America. He would go into a small town, and take a story from someone in the audience. His actors would use the audience member's story to create play on the spot. They used this type of theater to rally oppressed people into social change, but it's just as effective without a socio-political agenda.

A similar situation is a group in NYC called Improv Everywhere. You can read about their "missions" at http://www.improveverywhere.com/
