I have answered this question before. Pi is not 22/7. pi is irrational. It is the ratio of circumference to diameter.
Proof (for pi's existence) goes something like
http://cf.geocities.com/ilanpi/pi-exists.html
That means that it can be proved that the ratio c/d is a conxtant for all circles.
As to why this is equal to 3.1415926... this is just one of natures laws.

Because pi = 3.14159265358979323846264338327950 and 22/7 is approximately
22/7 = 3 1/7 = 3.142857142857142857142857142857142857
You see that pi and 22/7 have the same values for 2 decimal places and is sometimes used in quick or mental calculations (of course for 2 decimal position accuracy)
pi being 3.143 is not an accurate value.

22/7 is only an approximation for pi. The decimal numbers that form pi don't repeat so pi is one of the most famous irrational numbers.

Consider the diameter of a circle. Take that length (a line segment), and bent it into on arc. But it is bent into an arc in such a way that when it is put over the circumference of its' respective circle, it exactly overlaps it's circumference, it does not bend in towards the center of the circle or away from the centre of the circle.
Now, how many of these arc-ed line diameters do you need to complete one full circumference of it's own circle?
You need 3â14159..... of them.
The ratio of any diameter of it's respective circumference or
the ratio of it's radius to one of it's respective semi-circumference will always be
1 : 3â14159.... . This number 3â14159.... is known as pie (Ï). Wrote as a fraction its 22 / 7.
So the circumference and area of a circle are exact values but Ï is an never repeating ever lasting decimal.

Had you been born at the time Pythogoras invented Pi he would have named it Simpson and simpson would be = 22/7 now. Unfortunately you went to graze at that time.

22/7 is only an approximation, and it's the best approximation with a single digit denominator. There are other, better, approximations with larger denominators, such as 355/113.
