Also, vertical wind shear (increase in wind speed w/ height) is an important ingredient in hurricane formation. Too much vertical wind shear and you get zero hurricanes, no matter how darn hot the oceans get.

There is still a long time before the end of hurrican season. Katrina happend last year in August and there were 19 storms after that. So there is plenty of time.

I live in Florida near the beach, and we STILL have many, many damaged homes and businesses 2 years after Hurricane Ivan hit us!!
September and October have always been the months we dread as far as Hurricanes, and Katrina hit on August 29th last year. I'm sure the worst is yet to come. Keep your fingers crossed for us.

Last year, (way) above average temps. This year.............the opposite. It might hot on land but hurricanes brew over the ocean and that is the this that matters.

Hey Chuck,,,,,,, Pardner I was thinking the same thing.... I work on a drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico.... last year,,,,, on the 29 th Katrina hit..... now,,, the letter K is the 11th in the alphabet....right!!! and yesterday,,,, they had heat wave # 9 leave Africa,,, and if it turns into a tropical storm,,,, the name will be Debbie or Debby(?)... the 4th letter in the alphabet....
So,, I am wondering the same thing...... Where are they?????
