Volcanoes are mountains made of lava. Lava is the cooled rock that was expelled from the opening as molten rock, or magma.
Some interesting places in California (where we have many, many volcanoes) are: Lassen National Volcanic Park, Lava Beds National Monument, Mount Shasta, and so on. The Cascade mountains (Mount St. Helens is on the Northern end) is a chain of volcanoes.
Do some research on those names I've mentioned, they are all different from each other.

The study of these related things (volcanoes, planet cores, atmosphere and things that act upon them, chemical reactions, such as those when substances are heated, vaporized, mixed together under heat and pressure, etc) is called "vulcanism (after an ancient "god." So you can point out that interesting tie with "mythology.) Best study method for science: develop a list of questions related to all of those things, adding your own questions and ideas, liberally. The search websites under the individual items, as well as books, encyclopedia(s), dictionary (good stuff, sometimes, in the way it's written), and enjoy studying. If one answer leads to two or more new questions, you're on a roll!
