It releases the tension built up during the show. Happy endings that come after scenes of suffering or tragedies tend to provide this emotional spontaneous reaction. Some people don't cry at movies simply because mentally, they tune their minds already. It's like some people who don't react to horror movies - same reason. They tune themselves so that they consciously know that it is not real.
These same people would / could cry when faced with real life situations - it's not that they don't have emotions.

Because the happy ending is like a resolution derived from hardship, trials and tribulations. Thus, having a happy ending makes a person cry because it's therapeutic after the bad weather passes.

Nearly all the answers are good and I agree with them. I think we must identify with the character or the situation in some way and therefore we cry for happy.

Because they are usually emotionally overwhelming. It's okay that is a good cry. If you cry the director did his job as well as the actors.

really I don't know I remember watching Big Fish and the son knew his father had told white lies but based in fact and loved his father again I weep openly soooooooooooooooooooooooo I can't say
