Uninstall your printer following the steps in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base Article
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315539/en-us
then restart your computer after unplugging the printer.
Reinstall your printer as if its a fresh installation. Make sure cables are connected properly. If you wish connect your printer to a different USB Port.

You might want to try to unplug the printer, uninstall the driver...
then restart, install the driver, and connect the printer again...
Usually it will say that when theres a driver error or no driver installed at all...

if you have had more than one printer installed, you may want to go to the control panel and make sure the printer you are currently using is set as default printer. when you go to control panel (printers and other hardware) click on printers and it will display a list of printers installed make sure your current printer is set as default by right clicking and select "set as default" and try printing again.

It sounds like you have not installed the correct drivers or the original ones have become corrupt.
Go here http://www.driveragent.com/ and do a scan and install the latest drivers.
