now and again? I see them happily go about their business, but once in a while, they make this really weird sceaming, coughing, squealing sound (those who are familiar with this, will understand my description). Why do they do this?

Actually it's called barking. They do it for many different reasons. The main reason is to scare off their natural enemies. It's a defense mechanism. Every living creature has a built in defense mechanism including Squirrels.

I've found them to do it for a couple reasons ...
1. if they are scared [heard a young one that was at the top of a lamp post with a raccoon at the bottom of the pole after it.
2. to try and scare preditors/competition away [taped a peanut butter jar to our deck for the squirrels to finish out the chunky peanut butter. The one by the jar was making the screaching noise at three others that were on the ground trying to get to the peanut butter jar}.

So...I believe it is part of their 'defense' mechanism.

Because they are getting ready to bite me!! Hand Feed my local squirrels and have had two fall of the tree while holding my hand and they grab with their teeth if they start to fall. I have decided NOT to feed any larger wildlife because of this.
