In the end, you'll have to answer to yourself. Your parents aren't going to be around forever. If you choose a major that is second best to your passion, you'll probably experience less satisfaction out of everyday life. Think about it...about 5 to 8 hours of bland work? THATS most of your life. If you are passionate, then you'll probably make money as a consequence of your passion and beat out all those other people in your field who are just there to make money or even worse, there to please their parents.
That being said, if you are going to study the history of Temeculus paintings, then you will starve no matter how passionate you are. What is Temeculus paintings? Exactly... Don't choose majors that aren't interesting. In other words, make sure enough people are interested so that you will make money.

Case in point: Most people do not end up in work which is their major anyway. I am a Finance major but I ended up in Engineering. My cousin is a Economics major but ended up doing Tax. My friend did Chemical Engineering but is an Investment banker.
I guess just major what you like, even though you may lack the support because chances are you will do better since that is the major you like and you will enjoy the learning process much better.
The depth and breath of your academic, coupled with your personality and achievements in school lands you the job, not what major you do. Going college is to develop your critical thinking and analytical skills. It goes beyond the subject-matter.

As others have pointed out, often you don't end up working in the same field as your major. Still, you might want to consider getting a minor, either in your chosen area or the money-making area just to cover yourself. If you want to take it further, maybe consider a double major.

You are the one that is going to have to find a career with the education. Do what makes you happy. Honestly if you are just getting a BA a lot of the time you end up not specifically using your major anyways. I regret listening to the influence of my family. There influence led me to be in a position where I could not find a job when I first graduated. So heed their advice. You are the one who is going to have to live the life you choose, not them.

Listen to your heart. You're parents are aware of how many "lost cases" there are, and wouldn't want you to become one of them too. So enroll whatever pleases you, whatever makes you happy, whatever you know you'll enjoy, whatever you're gut tells you! OK? ;) But enrolling is one thing and ending the study is another, so do your best to finish it A.S.A.P. Your parents will be happy if they see you happy. You need to prove them wrong, and make sure you don't actually end up wiping floors in Walmart. Take care!

I would point out that a very large number of people end up working in fields unrelated to their major in college. Have a backup plan and discuss it with your parents.
