As you probably know, Wilson passed away this year at the age of 64 from a heart attack. Wison and I were close. I became friends with him through my guitarist, Steve Cropper, who recorded with the Soul Legend with Booker T. and the MG's.

One of the most electrifying performers I have ever seen. He was a giant in R&B, and left some big shoes to be filled. Here is a quote from his manager and my friend, Margo Lewis:

"Wilson was a consummate entertainer. He truly loved to perform, and when he took the stage, he would give the audience every last bit of energy in his body. The unique sound and quality of his voice only got better with age, singing his hits in their original keys well into his 60s. He influenced generations of singers and musicians. No matter what your age is, his records will pull you out of your seat onto the dance floor. Soulful and intense, that was Pickett, the music and the man."

So, you might guess that any version other than Wison's of the classic Mustang Sally, just doesn't do it for me.

The only version that matters is the original: Wilson Pickett.
