I was wondering if 3ft X 4 foot was a decent size or what is the "normal" size blanket? Also, I want him to be able to use it as a toddler too.

I make Baby Quilts for sale, the size you mentioned is a good size for a Baby, a bigger size would be nice for a toddler.the bigger it is the longer he can use it.

From 20 inches X 30 inches to about 30 inches X 40 inches.
The receiving blankets are about 25 inches square and some are about 28 inches square. These are usually made from fleece to keep the new born baby warm on the way home from the hospital, and can be used in the car carrier too for that purpose.

I make my own receiving blankets and they are 32" x 40". Bigger would be good for toddlers - I would make it at least wide enough to tuck around a crib mattress so that he can sleep under it when he gets old enough for it.

Try measuring the length of the mother's arms (from the tip of the middle finger to her elbow x 2). On width, that would depend on how big the baby is. Try measuring the length of the mother's arm (from the tip of the middle finger to her shoulder). That would be enough. Customized! Not too big, okay? Happy stitching. :)

I like them about the size of a lap blanket so they can use it even when they are older.

they can be as big as you want them, and if you are wanting him to use it when he gets older, the bigger the better.
