Happiness in its basic form is the satisfying of our needs. Such as a child being fed when it is hungry. As opposed to being left hungry , therefore unhappy. Anyone who has ever been hungry will know how good it felt to be fed.
However with the advent of modern life 'happiness' has been redefined, do you have all the current technology/shoes/house etc you desire?
A lot of people will say they are 'unhappy' cos their immediate wants are not being satisfied. Whether they will actualy suffer from the denying of these wants is unlikely.
Ask any person who has lived through terminal illness of themselves or a loved one and they will tell u that the suffering of looking death in the face has given them a whole new perspective of what is really important, and they try to appreciate and enjoy life more without the material things.
Personally a having been a punching bag for my ex husband I can honestly say I didnt 'understand' happiness more, I simply craved a feeling I knew my situation was denying.

Suffering is not needed to understand happiness, but happiness is needed to understand suffering. If you lived in a culture in which everyone suffered, and you became an exchange student with some one from a culture in which everyone was pain free; you'd want to learn how to become pain free. However the opposite would not be true of the person that exchanged cultures with you; he or she would want to show others how to become pain free, and they would want to learn how to become so.
True love is a joyful experience that does not need suffering to make it more enjoyable; nor is it ever felt to be a "flat" existence. We might dislike things about our life or mate, but where there is love felt for and from another or others, that is not the problem. The problem is in realizing that there must be something better, but not being able to figure out what that something better might be.

I don't believe it is accurate to say "This World" in this question. It's more like, "Is Your world full of suffering or happiness? Everyone sees the state of the world differently. My world is in good shape.
As for the second part of your question, I do believe that a person needs rough spots in life to appreciate the good times.

That is the basic rules of living. Without suffering then you'll not know what happiness is. There is no pros and cons to it. It's like life without any contradiction. It's like living a life with just one colour. Without any preference then we might as well just take in instead of choose.

given the text line under your question(s), we shouldn't really bother to answer, since your choice of words gives away that you have already made up your mind about what's what.. nevertheless, I will grab the opportunity and totally set myself apart from this mockery of philosophy that has been indelibly printed (by suggestion more than by logic) to every human brain: no good is possible without evil, no joy is ever free of sorrow, this is a world that forever will struggle with opposites.. and I repeat: I am totally setting myself apart from this mockery that has been handed down nearly as the absolute truth.. I challenge those that have 'decided' this axiom to be a valid one in the world we live, to really display a world that they created where they honestly tried to have joy free of sorrow but they couldn't .. (kisses are being sent to you from the days of the aftermath ...you know who you are..)
