Make sure your coin was really minted in 1803. I found a coin that sounds just like yours and I got excited, it was in mint condition no less! Then on a hunch, I looked at the coin again. While it says 1803 on the back, it was really minted in 2003/2004 as it says on the FRONT. Look to the lower right of Jefferson's portrait. If you see *2004*, it's worth 5cents. Sorry.

Im sorry to say but the coin you have is either a fantasy piece or a medal .
The U.S.did not make nickels in 1803 ,However they did make half dimes starting in1794 and ending in1873.
The designs changed 8 times and never was there a Louisiana purchase reverse on the back .

Sorry nickels didn't show up till 1866. They did make a silver half dime that year. You must have a medalet or token that was modern made. They did produce some medals and medalets in 1903 by private parties, but I have no information on them. It is a good chance you have a modern made one from maybe, a town or city that was in the original area. More info is needed for a better answer.

Down to Earth is right. If you ever want to find out when or where a coin was minted look on the front or side of the coin. You'll notice on Native American or Presidential Dollars, more of the recent years are on the side. You can't buy Presidential dollars at the bank anymore. They are no longer released for circulation.
