The wise old owl. They say they live a long life. Don't mess with old farts. Age and treachery will always over come youth and skill.
Have a great day.

The idea of "the wise old owl" comes entirely from the ancient Greeks. They associated the bird with the goddess Athene (Goddess of Wisdom), and saw it as a sign of victory if an owl flew before advancing Greek soldiers in time of war.
The Romans hated the bird, though, seeing it as a sign of death and disaster.
This is rather an odd bit of tradition to endure, owls largely being seen as birds of ill omen over a gret deal of history.
A line from Theophrastus (circa 319 BCE) runs: "If an owl is startled by him in his walk, he will exclaim 'Glory be to Athene!' before he proceeds."

Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, was associated with owls. Why the Greeks picked that animal is unclear, but it's hung on ever since.
