Each festival has its own significance. But the ancient culture prescribes these festivals mainly to show gratitude to something. Gratitude is given lot of importance in Indian way of life. Festivals become an effective tool to imbibe these values, and once a person starts experiencing gratitude, humility follows.

I'n not an Indian, but I have been to several Indian "Pow Wow's" - if that is the same as what you are asking about. I personally went mainly to gamble. But I got the impression that it is about people, not necessarily family per se, but people all of a same culture, with the same beliefs to have a place to gather to share and socialize.

I didn't word that very well. But I think it's all of the above, but it seems to be about a re-union (at least yearly, I think) of a particular tribe getting together. But each festival has only one tribe. There are many festivals, each tribe has their own. Make any sense?

Red Indians or the Indians as from India?
Whatever the race/religion, there are numerous festivals they celebrate and each one has its significance.
The most popular and important festival of the Indians I know is Diwali (also called Deepavali), a major Hindu festival. Known as the "Festival of Lights," it symbolises the victory of good over evil, and lamps are lit as a sign of celebration and hope for mankind. Celebrations focus on lights and lamps. Fireworks are associated with the festival in some regions of the country.

Deepavali is celebrated for five consecutive days in the Hindu month of Ashwayuja. It usually occurs in October/November, and is one of the most popular and eagerly awaited festivals of India. Hindus, Jains and Sikhs alike regard it as a celebration of life and use the occasion to strengthen family and social relationships. For Jains it is one of the most important festivals, and beginning of the Jain year. It is also a significant festival for the Sikh faith.
