I think it's a different answer than just to distinguish them. Like, for example, when that John Karr guy from the Ramsey case first came about, he was just John Karr, but now he's John Mark Karr. It's weird.

Because some of them have common names and using a middle name distinguishes them from mistaking the criminal from others. (who may have the same common name).

Mostly because of where they got that info from seeing the arrest warrent which will list the "criminals" name reaper out.........

They do this as to distguish those people, from ordinary people.
