I'm from Pennsylvania, where oak wood is revered.
Do NOT put water on your oak floor! Bruce hardwood floor cleaner, and the cleaner/polish, is your best bet. you probably just need the cleaner/polish. You won't need straight cleaner for several years.
The point of getting an oak floor is so you don't have to wash it, okay? Just dust mop it, and put down a little wax now and then.

I also have oak hardwood floors which we painstakingly refinished a few months ago. Seems the previous owners were a little too diligent with their cleaning and took off 90% of the finish, thus turning all the grain of the wood black. Looked awful.
Anyway, no, you don't want water just sitting on your floor, and harsh cleaners could ruin the finish. My best suggestion, and what I use personally, is to get yourself a good microfibre mop (I use the MagicBlue, available at Walmart, etc). You simply wet the removable mop head with plain water (no cleaner is necessary, believe me), wring it out well, and start to scrubbing. You will be able to feel when the mop starts drying out too much as it won't glide nicely anymore. Then you give it a good rinse out in hot water, wring, and start again. A few rinses, and your floor is clean. It leaves so little water that it dries literally within a minute or two, and the microfibre head scrubs off all the dirt without any harsh cleaner. Plus, the head is machine washable so you can just toss it in the machine when you're done.

I have oak wood floors in my kitchen and dinette area, I use one cup of vinegar to a bucket of water, don't use a mop it will leave too much water on the floor. This is a get down on your hands and knees job, use an old wash cloth and wring it out well and wipe and rinse often in the bucket with the vinegar and water. I use orange glo for hardwood floors after cleaning with the vinegar and water solution and apply it with a old wash cloth as well. Keeps the floor nice and shiney looking.

Do not put water on your floor unless you want permanent water stains. The best thing to do is clean it with Old English wood polish.
