The silver haired men you refer to are Kadaj, Yazoo and Roz. They are remnants of Sephiroth and they wish to have a reunion in order to bring him back. Why would they want to defeat him?

Sephiroth is an ancient and will never be defeated. He will always come back as one thing or another.
