if you want to make them from scratch, just get your wood and a good dremell tool. they have every bit you would need and then you could put as much into it as you wanted or needed.. may not be some expensive gimmick but it works just as well as any other toolz..

laminate 3 thin pieces of wood. If you try to make it out of solid stock, it will split with humidity.
Turn your stock on a lathe to the o.d. you desire,(depends on ring size)
Bore hole through center, (I would use a forstner bit), a little smaller than ring size.
Sand to round edges.
