You can let it sleep of hibernate if you want, but I always recommend to my clients a shutdown or reboot at least once a week.
A reboot allows your laptop (or any PC) to clear out everything from its working memory, and start fresh.

It depends on your use.
If you work longer hours, then in small breaks, it is better to put it in Standby position. At this point your laptop will consume less power and keep it cool. However don't keep it on standby position when you're going to bed. If you need rest, this machine also needs the components to cool down so turning it off will not only make your Laptop/Notebooks system cool it will also reduce your electric bill.
I hope you can use your common sense to keep it better.
Take a good care of your Laptop/Notebook.

If you're not going to use it for a few hours, I would turn it off. It lets the machine cool down and rest for a while, and saves the battery and charger life-span. Also, if you're using Windows, go to Start > Programs > System Tools > (from here you should select "Disk Cleanup" and then "Disk Defragment" -or- select "Scheduled Tasks" and run the cleanup and defrag every day to keep the hard drive and motherboard neat and tidy, running smoother and faster.)
Also, it's a good idea to run a virus-check and spyware scan to keep your machine running well.

You should turn it off as soon as you're done with using it or in your case turn it off everynight. Leaving it on consumes electricity, it also may overheat and damage your motherboard (happened to me before).

you should try to turn it off. laptops are more sensitive compared to computers and overheat a lot more easily. sleeping or hibernate it is not really a good thing. it uses a lot more virtual memory and hd space when its unnecessary.

Its better to turn it off as soon as you finish using it, be it day or night. If you leave it on and you are connected to tthe internet, there are chances of your comp being hacked and all the above mentioned answers. I turn of mine including the desk top.
