Night market in all cities (biggest in Taipei, Shilin Night Market) where you can find food, shopping (clothes, shoes, bags, name it). Special food & drinks: Chou Toufu (fried Tofu), Ru Wei (soup with tofu, vegetables, meat etc inside), Zhen Zhu Nai Cha (Milk Bubble Tea). Or you might want to try Japanese food in Taiwan which is more cheaper compare to the sushi's shop in Japan.
If you like museums, you can try National Palace Museum (also in Taipei). Or if you are interested in visiting temple, there are also one famous temple Long Shan Temple.
For beaches, try Genting.
There's also some hot spring bath in Beitou and Xin Beitou. It's nice during Oct. Or for Seaworld, go to Hualien city. Historical area and traditional food: Tainan city.

There is a night market that you can visit: San Ho Night Market, which is located just outside the Taipei Bridge at the San Chung City outside main Taipei City. Lots of cheap stuff and good food abound and most of the people you see are locals. The beef noodles in Taiwan and the Yung Ho soyabean milk are very famous. If you are on the budget, you can stay at Taipei House International Youth Hostel, which i have stayed before, which is really very cheap and the owner is very nice and friendly.

I live in Taiwan for thirteen years already.
I think you should go east coast of Taiwan(like Hualian & Taitung).
There's very beautiful.
And you can go to Taipei City, too. It's the largest city of Taiwan.

In Taipei there is a restaurant called Ding Tai Feng and they have really good Xiao Long Bao. I wouldn't leave Taiwan without eating those.........

TPE is pretty much like HKG or SG, eat shop and usual stuff.
Try the street food at Ximen Street, if you are gutsy .. snakes are great!
Go south for beach holiday. Taizhong is more laid back and full of very nice farming folks.

the best place to go is outside the tourist area where you can find really good food instead of it being "Americanized"
