my dr told me to keep active

Walkings pretty good, generally nothing that makes you bend over, like riding a bike, also somthing thats low impact, what about swimming?

The term "slipped disc" is really a misnomer..The disc is actually compressed on one side allowing a ballooning on the other side.This is the part of the disc that will cause nerve irritation and pain.This feature is caused by the vertebrae being tilted one way and the one below in another. Often there is rotation of the vertebra as well. There is muscle tightness on one side and increased growth of the muscle on the other.. (just to keep you upright). The shorter muscle is the one in dire need of stretching, as it has atrophied to some extent.Most often this condition originates as a result of a short leg on one side.

If you want to keep fit walking is best if you avoid hills
swimming may make a back worse
Listen to your body

basically bending over or twisting your spine is forbidden
