they have pigmented cells - chromatophores - in their skin that can shrink or expand if the color is supposed to be hidden /seen. so the speed of the process is quick - like you getting goosebumps. like if i annoy my cham it turns striped or dark spotted, if he falls asleep it goes yellowish - these changes are mostly according to mood , not according to surrounding color. but yes, they adjust their color to surroundings (grey, green, many shades of green, brouwn), but not in a way that they would imitate it perfectly. some colours are not possible for them, either.

ya they change their colour according to the object in which they stops,,,,,,,,, they do it by special chromotographic cells exists in the outer epidermal layer of their skin,,,,
