The ISP in Dubai has figured out a way to effectively block Skype. Previously they had only blocked access to skype.com, but anyone able to get the client from another source was still able to log on and use it. Now apparently they have found a way to filter out Skype logon packets thus preventing people from logging on to the Skype network. This method has been extremely effective and they have managed to cause insane levels of anger and frustration among residents.

I had thought previously that since Skype used a p2p protocol and it was encrypted, that there is no way to filter out and drop Skype packets. However apparently someone discovered a way to identify the Skype logon packets using a proxy (http://lists.grok.org.uk/pipermail/full-disclosure/2005-November/038646.html)
I'm guessing they may be applying this nationwide. I decided to use Tor and can now connect, but Tor is too slow. Alternatively, could I just use an http proxy to tunnel skype? Would connecting to a VPN work?

How about alternatives for PC-PC talk, such as Yahoo Communicator?

I'm sure Dubai telecomms are just protecting uncompetitively high telephone prices, but as the administrator of an internet gateway myself, I did all in my power to block Skype activity due to the enormous pressure it puts on the internet gateway - it might be cheap for the user, but for the ISP it is very expensive due to the increase in filter processor power and NAT (or rather PAT) processing required.

however great the concept of tunneling/vpn is, understand that it is a 2-way link. with that comes the fact that wherever you connect to also has to run the same tunnel. for this to work you would need to find a friend outside of dubai. my recommendation is if you want to find something on the internet, try looking up ftp sites. ftp is run differently than a p2p because it is on a specified port amd socket. also, ftp works in the same concept as a tunnel or virtual private network because you are accessing information on a remote location. also, telnet works in the same form/fashion. for more information on how to use these protocols check out the book "unix in a nutshell". by the way, ftp and telnet are protocols and so with that, they are already installed on your computer and ready to run.
