Nice question, so many fun ways to answer it. And it does make one wonder doesn't it? On serious note though, he realized it by watching the calf suck. Calves will sometimes dribble milk from the their mouth, and man probably thought, hey my own kids ate like that were they were babies, and that cow looks like it she's got plenty to go around. But what's kind of funny to think about, is that until man came up with the concept of milking into a bucket, he probably just stuck his head next to the calf's and sucked right along side the calf. Ha, I wonder how many times he got kicked in the head.

It was a wee day of fieldwork. I was thirsting for some water, and fell into a sleepy haze.

I stumbled and crawled to a mooing creature that lent me a hose, which I suckled quite calmly.

I came to, and realized this hose was an udder of a cow!

But, my, was the milk tasty.

He was probably watching a calf nurse, figured it was feeding just as the infants in his tribe did when they nursed their mothers, and put two and two together.
