Three possibilities:
1) A type of spy plane used by the United States in the 1960's - made famous when Gary Powers' U2 plane was shot down over Russia and he was taken as a prisoner during the Cold War.
2) U2 as in "you too" referring to the audience and its role in the musical experience
3) a U2 is an unemployment form in Ireland

The band was originally called Feedback when they first started (Dik Evens (Edge's brother) and another kid from school were in the band. When they kicke dout the younger kid they changed the name to The Hype. Then Dik left to go to colleger (and eventually join the band Virgin Prunes, good band too btw) I can't remember but I think it was the person who was helping them design their LP cover told them they should change their name to U2 and they did. They've never fully explained why they have the name U2, but hey I like it and they are the best band in the world.

Came from the U2 spylane. There's also a V2 plane. There's some debate on this point in Wikipedia, however.

one day they saw a famous band that inspired them and they got 2 meet them. then the bands played together and they said to the famous band "hey u guys r really great musicians" and the famous band said "U2" they couldn't believe the band they looked up to said they were good. they cherished those words which is evident in their band name-U2. the end!!!

They wanted the audience to be involved and feel like they were also part of the show. The band and all of you [the audience] too.

Thus, U2.
